CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The town hall wanted to pull all of the wild horses from the island so that they could modernize the town. At least, that was Isaac's idea. He was running for mayor and wanted something to build off of. It was going to be getting the horses away from here.
As April walked downtown, a shiver went up her back. She wasn't sure if it was because she was nervous or because the cold air was blowing more than the day before.
The street was bustling with people that time of day, walking dogs, and touring the town. Cars drove by sporadically, blending into the scenery. The town square had a distinct smell of the sea, salty and fresh.
It felt like home, just like every other time April made her way down the long streets.
But tonight, the air was thick with tension. April could feel the unease radiating from the people around her, all of them with different opinions regarding the wild horses. Some were for keeping them on the island, while others were with Isaac, wanting them gone.
As she approached the town hall, she saw a familiar figure standing outside. It was Kellie, waiting for her with a smile across her face.
"Finally!" she said, waving April towards her. "You have to see this."
They peeked around the corner of the town hall building. Further down the busy street, all April could see was signs. Protesters from all over the state had come to support the native horse population.
April's heart swelled with gratitude towards the supporters. She felt a deep sense of camaraderie with them, knowing that they all shared the same passion.
April felt a fire ignite in her chest. She had never seen so many people come out to protest for something like this. It made her feel like they had a chance, like they could make a difference.
The signs read, "Save the horses," "Wild horses belong on the island," and "Don't let greed destroy our heritage."
"I can't believe this," April said, a smile spreading across her face. "Look at all these people."
"I know," Kellie said, beaming. "The island has never seen this much support for anything before. We might actually have a chance."
It was reassuring to know that other people felt the same way she did. But at the same time, April knew it wasn't her call, but the board's. And they were constantly up in the air, willing to be bought out by Isaac and his schemes.
As they made their way through the crowds, April couldn't shake off the feeling of nervousness. What if the board didn't listen to the voices of the people, the voices of the animals that she had fought so hard to amplify?
As they made their way inside the town hall, April couldn't help but feel like all eyes were on her. She knew that she was one of the few locals fighting for the horses, and she felt the weight of that responsibility heavy on her shoulders.
April could feel the energy in the room, the anticipation and the tension, and it made her heart race.
